I need opinions on where to get blinds/curtains for my new condo.?

Posted under Discount Blinds

I don’t want to spend a lot on getting custom blinds. I am actually thinking that standard slat ones will be fine. Maybe wooden colored for the bedrooms and white for the kitchen and office. And a standard verticle set for the sliding glass doors. Should I just go to Home Depot? What about the sites on the web that are "discount" suppliers? Also, since I just want it simple, would it be a waste of time getting one of the free consultants to come to the condo to look at it all? I have gotten a mailing from one and I also saw them on the web. Do they actually have good ideas?
Anyone have any success stories on this…?

I had the same situation with wanting a nice window covering but not wanting to spend a lot.

I went to Home Depot and talked with one of the sales people and told her exactly that. They have a custom blind section with lots of special colors. I came home and measured my window, went back and chose a very nice "old gold" skinny slat blind. It is very nice, was inexpensive and looks great. There are also cloth ones that are nice but were a little out of my budget range. Also, some of your windows may be standard sizes so something off the shelf would work well if the room is not one of the "important" ones.

Talking with a consultant there in the store was great. However, the free, in-home consultant suggested very high priced items. I have never used Internet services to purchase things that I am not absolutely sure of like custom blinds. Seeing firsthand is better, at least for me.

I am very happy with my choice I got from Home Depot. The whole process was very easy.

Rise and Shine Automatic Window Blinds

I modified my alarm clock to open my bedroom shades whenever the alarm goes off (with buzzer or silently). Since the shades are now motorized they also open/close with a push of a button!

Help choosing colour of Roman Blinds for bedroom?

Posted under Roman Blinds

Hi, I’m trying to choose what colour roman blinds to have in my bedroom. My walls are cream (doors and skirting boards are white) The carpet is a deep heather/pink colour (I think more pink then purple though) my furniture is white. Could anyone suggest a colour of roman style blind that would look good, I’m guessing the carpet is the dominant colour, the walls are the medium colour so I guess I am looking for an accent, white possibly? or is that to stark? Help!! I have no idea!!!

Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks x

Hi,
I am qualified in interior design and will help!
From what you have described I would go with something which has the carpet colour in. If you go for white or cream then your eyes will be drawn to the carpet colour when you walk in the room. To avoid the carpet being too overpowering in the scheme you would need to either have the same colour blinds as the carpet or blinds that have a mixture of the rooms colours, ie a patterned cream/white/heather. I would suggest heather cushions or accessories somewhere in the room too to tie the whole thing together, just don’t go overboard! Good luck!

Does anyone have a good website to buy window coverings thats very cheap?

Posted under Window Coverings

My boyfriend and I are redoing a house together and each room is getting a total make over. We are trying to cut down on costs with window coverings and need some ideas of where to buy these besides Walmart. I do have access to a sewing machine also. Just looking for some ideas. Thanks

I bought some close-out panels at Overstock.com and was very pleased with them.

Also, you might want to consider using sheets for your ‘drapes’. They already have a hem in them and you can put a pole through the hem, or attach draprey clips. They will puddle on the floor and look great.

What kind of window treatments work well with bay windows that are on the front of the house?

Posted under Window Treatments

Another asker asked how she should decorate the area around her bay windows. Those answers (benches, plants, wicker, etc) were helpful, but I am more interested in window treatments.

I would use the rice paper blinds. The filter out the suns rays but let the light in. They also make mechanical ones with remote controls.( Sound like a kids toy.)

How should the slats on my window blinds be turned to block the most heat?

Posted under Window Blinds

Trying to block some of the heat coming into my home. I think the slats on the window blinds should be turned so that the edge close to the window goes down, my husband thinks it will block more heat going the other way. Any thoughts?

I think that you are right and that, unless you want to keep adjusting the slats, the angle should be equal to your latitude. For example, if you are in Philadelphia, PA (40°N), the slats should be 40° from the horizontal. That way, you will reflect the most light back to the window. It won’t go back thru but it might localize the heat there.
